Since 1987 the AEF has been Ashland’s behind-the-scenes, private place to which those in need have been able to turn for help.

1st Annual AEF Walk-A-Thon:
Financial Update & Photos

By John Ellsworth
October 24, 2007

Planning for the 2008 Walk a thon has already started. Anyone wishing to become involved in next year’s event should contact Nora Guidi or Margot Ellsworth at 508-231-4566.

A recent TV spot on WACA TV - Channel 8, featured John Ellsworth, the AEF chairman, and the two primary people involved with the Walk-A-Thon, Nora Guidi and Margot Ellsworth. They talked about the organization leading up to the walk, the walk itself, and the results achieved.

The results were outstanding: $13,602.52!! That represents a 35% increase in this year’s projection of donations.

Other people who worked on the committee were: Melanie Conner, Joyce Crocetti and Scott MacIver. People/firms who donated material assistance were: T-Shirts, Terri Wysor at Embroidery Place; Banners, Jon Grocer at AllType Signs; printing on the T-Shirts, Steve Bremner at Imprint Graphics; sound system at the Pavilion, Gary Guidi of HiRez; and The Homes Connection.

The number of walkers who gathered at the Start-Finish (Pavilion) was much larger than was first thought it would be. I estimate as many as 125 to 150 actually walked at least part of the course. There were two courses: the main course up Ashland’s Heart Break Hill (Holliston Hill on Main Street – it apparently is a difficult climb) and around the Warren School for a 5 mile course; and, one around downtown of about 2 miles. Most walkers opted for the 5 mile course.

The School Committee had a competition to see who could raise the most money. The hands-down winner, with the superb assistance of Middle School principal, Kevin Carney, was Fran Blake; as a team they accounted for over $1700.

Money is still coming in, and I fully expect the committee to have raised over $14,000 before money tails off.

The group has started plans for next year. More publicity, more walkers, more competition, more money, a much shorter course for Seniors, a reception at the end, etc. are some of the initial thoughts. If you know anyone who wants to pitch in on this winning team, have them contact Margot or Nora at 508-231-4566, or email them at mellsworth@homesconnection.com or nguidi@homesconnection.com.

If you see any of these people named above, thank them profusely.

And just as a very simple reality check on the amount of good that they have enabled, this effort by these people has insured that the AEF, thru Sue William’s wonderful efforts, will be able to:

  • fill 27 oil tanks this winter;
    or,
  • send 54 families to Shaw’s or Market Basket with coupons worth $250 for food;
    or,
  • provide Holiday Season Gifts to 200+ children this Holiday Season;
    or,
  • etc.

In sum, a huge amount of good has been enabled.

So yes, when you see them, thank them, very profusely, indeed!
